In presenting a complete edition of its historical material dating from the time before the introduction of tape recording in 1950/51, the Phonogrammarchiv breaks new ground among the international community of related institutions. The historical material comprises ca. 4000 recordings, ca. 3200 on so-called Phonogramme and ca. 800 on gramophone discs. The decision in favor of a complete edition was to a large extent motivated by increased interest in these recordings from outside the narrow circle of research institutions concerned with sound archiving. In many cases, the historical recordings are the earliest of their kind, documenting cultures and languages which have since been subject to fundamental changes. Some of the recordings preserve cultures or styles of expression that no longer exist in the form preserved here. These collections, therefore, are also attracting the attention of a general public interested in culture and histroy, especially in the regions of their origin. The edition of these historical sound documents on CD is meant to make possible easy access, not only to the sound documents as such. They are therefore accompanied by the original protocols, published on a CD-Rom as digital images, while a commentary section briefly discusses the historical material from a modern perspective in order to facilitate further evaluation. Of course, although these commentaries cannot anticipate or replace a more exhaustive treatment, they can provide useful information about the circumstances under which the recordings were made. Transliterations/transcriptions of the recorded melodies and texts will help in gaining access to the recordings' contents, which, due to their historical sound quality, are often difficult to hear. "The First Expeditions" was chosen to open the edition, since it was for these expeditions to prove the newly developed Archiv-Phonograph fit for its tasks. These expeditions of 1901 provided an ideal opportunity for putting it to the test. The reports from these expeditions not only predicated the continuation of the enterprise as such, but also played a role in establishing the Phonogrammarchiv as a lasting institution. These reports were also to lead to substantial improvements of the Archiv-Phonograph, which was employed for field recordings until 1931, and which was also used by institutions outside of Austria in Zurich, Zagreb in the Netherlands./p"(Verlagstext). The present study makes the first attempt to put together, in a systematic manner, the figures of speech and other stylistic phenomena attested in the corpus of the Old Persian royal inscriptions. For those texts are different from simple prose in that they show clear traces of a stylization that similarly to using certain words and word forms lend them characteristic features of an artificial language. The phenomena to be treated in that context are presented in transcription according to the author s text edition (Die altpersischen Inschriften der Achaimeniden, 2009) in form of a list without classifying them according to phonetic, grammatical, lexical, and syntactic criteria. References to comparable phenomena in the related languages (in particular in Avestan) are consciously given only sporadically in order not to distract the reader s attention from the Old Persian evidence. The comparison with Avestan or within the ancient Indo-Iranian languages, i. e. in form of Comparative Stylistics of Indo-Iranian , has to be aimed at only after a comprehensive collection of the testimonies of the individual languages. The present book intends to give a first impetus to this research.

More than 150 documents in Bactrian, the chief administrative language of pre-Islamic Afghanistan, have come to light during the last twenty-five years. These documents include letters, legal contracts, economic documents and a few Buddhist texts; many of them bear dates in the so-called Bactrian era , which is also known from a few inscriptions, such as the Tochi valley inscriptions in Pakistan, but whose starting-point is controversial. The Bactrian documents have the potential to transform our knowledge of the history of the region during the 4th to 8th centuries CE, a period for which we have few contemporary records, but before they can be fully exploited as historical sources it is necessary to establish their relative and absolute chronology. The present volume aims to fulfil this need. In Part 1 we consider the dated documents, discussing the nature of the Bactrian calendar and the epoch of the Bactrian era, and concluding with a conspectus in which all the attested dates are converted to Julian dates on the basis of the facts and arguments presented. In Part 2 we turn to the equally important undated documents, systematically weighing up all types of evidence, whether historical, prosopographical, palaeographical, linguistic or orthographic, which may have a bearing on their dating. Part 3 provides a handy check-list of our conclusions, while the Appendices provide additional and supporting material including editions of the Tochi valley inscriptions and of a Pahlavi letter which was purchased together with the Bactrian documents.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 357 pages. On the basis of a thorough philological-linguistic study, the book aims primarily at reintegrating the complex whole of the various phenomena that have contributed to creating what in modern scholarship runs under the name of Christian Sogdian Gospel Lectionary E5, a set of manuscript fragments preserved in the Turfan Collection in Berlin. The study applies a precise methodology that puts various disciplinary approaches on the same level in order to relate and interconnect textual, material and historical-cultural aspects. Specific codicological characteristics are considered in correlation with the broader manuscript tradition to which the fragments belong. The discussion of the Gospel lectionary leads to reflections on the transmission, reception and development of a specific body of religious knowledge, namely that of the Church of the East. The exploration of linguistic phenomena takes also into consideration the processes at work in the missionary history of the Church of the East in Central Asia between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the Oasis of Turfan in present-day Xinjiang, China. The book therefore addresses Iranologists as well as students of Eastern Christianity and of manuscript cultures.

The present volume is the fourth of five parts of Wassaf s History (Tarih-i Wassaf) in the German translation by the Austrian orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774 1856). The author of this important piece of Persian historiography, saraf ad-Din 'Abd Allah b. Fadl Allah Wassaf from Shiraz, describes the history of his home province Fars in the Mongol period in Iran including the history of neighbouring dynasties. The fourth volume of Wassaf s History covers the end of the reign of Gazan Han (1295 1304) and the reign of his brother and successor Olgaitu (1304 1316). The last third of this volume is devoted to the description of the successors of Dschingis Chan in Transoxania.

Should modern research classify chronicles solely on the basis of the dynasty in whose members name they were written? Based on chronicles written between 1501 and 1578 at the courts of Herat and Qazvin, this study shows how the history of the Islamicate World down to the Safavid rulers was told. The external form of chronicles is the subject of this study: volume, structure, and style, which show significant differences between the individual texts. While the chronicles from Herat tell history in great detail as a coherent narrative in wordy style, the texts from Qazvin present a scant summary in episodic form and straightforward language. Apart from the dedication, the presumed Safavid chronicles do not have all too much in common. Thus, an analysis of the external forms of these narratives shows the rather limited influence of the family of patrons on large parts of the historiographical texts written under their rule. In return, it illustrates the influence of concrete contexts and long-term structures on the writing of history in pre-modern Iran and thus provides new perspectives for historiographical research.

Starting from important new archaeological findings and insights that have led to a rethinking of the history of viticulture in Iran and its wider Asian context, this volume explores various aspects of the cultural, social and political significance of grape wine in the Iranian cultural sphere. It assembles specialized studies and interpretative essays ranging from the question of the origins of viticulture and winemaking and the trade of wine between the Iranian plateau and China to viticulture and wine consumption in 20th-century Kafiristan, from the place of intoxicating beverages in hadith to the nature and function of wine in classical Persian poetry and Iranian architecture, from the ambiguities of alcohol in pre-modern Persia to the challenges of modernity and colonial encounters.

This book includes a critical edition and translation of the second chapter of a third- or fourth-century Buddhist Sanskrit text, the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthānasūtra, which sheds light on the so-called Middle Period of Indian Buddhism. In his introduction, Stuart argues that meditative practice, rhetoric, and philosophy were intimately tied to one another when the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthānasūtra was redacted, and that it serves as an important historical touchstone for understanding the development of Buddhist mind-centered metaphysics. This development is historically significant because it marks a major shift in Indian Buddhist religious practice, which conditioned the emergence of fully developed Mahāyāna path schemes and power-oriented tantric ritual traditions in the centuries that followed the text s compilation.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 287 Seiten, 22,5x15cm, broschiert.

This study is devoted to the city of Herat and its changing fortune within the eastern Iranian province of Khurasan in early modern and modern times. Based on Persian primary sources, it gauges the role of political developments and cultural memory in the shaping of spatial concepts and regional structures. As the capital of the Timurid Empire, Herat's pivotal position reflected the political and spiritual centrality of an urban space embedden in a florescent agricultural and economic setting. Suffering a gradual decline in the subsequent centuries, the city receded to the sidelines of the historical narrative, a fact mirrored by a shift in focus in the sources from the local setting to larger strategic and ecological considerations pertaining to the province as a whole. With the delineation of fixed borders and the division of the region between Iran, Afghanistan and Transcaspia in the late 19th century, elastic concepts of sovereignty were replaced with hierarchical and centralistic notions of the state. Offering a long-term analysis of changing perceptions of power and space, this book provides the groundwork for a new understanding of the history of the region and its transition to modernity. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1101 pages.
