The Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust and the National Library of New Zealand combined to produce this volume, the first in a series of "Early Eyewitness Accounts of Maori Life." The preface states the work is "of exact transcriptions and an English translation of accounts compiled by J F M de Surville and his officers following the 1759 visit by the St Jean Baptiste to the northern coasts of New Zealand." Transcription and translation by Isobel Ollivier and Cheryl Hingley, with an appendix of charts and drawings from the voyage compiled by Jeremy Spencer. His appendix is 13 pages and drawings include Maori figures, implements, weapons, ornaments, canoes and structures, there are also a number of tables in the text section. Lay-out follows the original French entries with the translation generally opposite. First edition of 1982, 225 pages including three appendices, plus charts/drawings appendix. Brown imitation leather hard covers VG+ with light bumps to front corners, few light,small and unobtrusive ,marks front board, colour e/papers, few brown marks lower edge title page, otherwise internall;y excellent, no inscriptions. Measuring (unpacked) 26cm deep by 30 cm by 2cm and weighing 1.2 kgs this book would require additional postage for international delivery.
