No DJ as published. Pictorial laminate boards and spine with dark brown lettering on the spine and front board. 319 pp 8vo. This book is written by Etta Jones' great niece based on her letters to family, her unpublished memoir, and her own research. Etta was a an Easterner who moved to Alaska in 1922 on a dare with her sister to spend one year in a state of adventure. She met Foster Jones, a prospector and hunter, fell in love, married and spent 20 years teaching in remote Alaskan villages. In 1942 they were teaching on Attu when the Japanese invaded in WWII, killing her husband and taking her as a captive/P.O.W. (prisoner of war) back to the Yokosuka area where she remained for the duration of the war. Her letters give a vivid description of the early days of Alaska before the region was "civilized" and the story of her husband's death and her imprisonment is heartbreaking. A true story of a little-known segment of WWII. A clean pristine copy.
