Paperback. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to the extremities; the pages have tanned somewhat, due to aging; else flawless. The binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the covers. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing only a couple of unobtrusive flaws. Bright and Clean. Virtually 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (7.75 x 5 x 0.95 inches). iv, 332 pages. Language: English. Weight: 9.6 ounces. Pocket Classics Series. This is a Reprint Edition, published in 1996, of a book originally published in 1850. Trade Paperback. The Ways of the Hour was James Fenimore Cooper's last novel, published in 1850. Set in a rural New York county seat outside New York City, it is a courtroom drama of a woman accused of murder and theft, and of the men and women who defend her case. The surprise ending is perhaps as unexpected as any in crime fiction. Cooper used the novel, among other things, to express his discontent with changes in New York State's judicial system during the 1840s, with the corruption of courts and juries, and with new ideas of women's rights. The accused woman, Mary Monson, is a notable character in her own right. The Ways of the Hour should be considered a classic in the history of the mystery novel -- as it is perhaps the first novel to revolve almost entirely about a courtroom murder trial. First Edition Thus (1996), so stated. First published in 1850.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Brown cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No inscription. 228 pages clean and tight. This collection of extracts forms a vivid and poignant history of the experience of modern warfare. Divided into two parts, on the First and Second World Wars, the letters have been drawn together to provide a continuous narrative of events from the fresh perspective of those who were intimately caught up in them. In addition, these letters, a large number of which come from ordinary soldiers and civilians, chronicle a nation's response to war. Common emotions and attitudes are revealed, both towards the personal experience of war and the wider question of the morality of war in general. `It's a bloody thing, half the youth of Europe blown through pain to nothingness,' wrote Rupert Brooke in 1914; `The world has gone truly mad,' wrote a private to his mother expressing the same incomprehension nearly thirty years later. Recurring themes include the spirit of camaraderie and selflessness, whether in the trenches of Flanders during the First World War or in the London suburbs during the Blitz of 1940-1: comradeship, as one private wrote from his squalid trench, was `the only clean thing borne of this life of cruelty and filth. It grows in purity from the very obscenity of its surroundings.' Humour and a determination to carry on life as normal is also prevalent: a civilian caught in his bath during an air raid in Liverpool relates, `I arose, put on my tin hat, and returned to my bath, a sweet sight, but one must wash.' Letters From Two World Wars has been compiled from private as well as published sources, providing a new and illuminating firsthand account of conflict in the twentieth century. Size: Lge 8vo.
