(Hardcover, 1970). (1952) 1972 4th edition reprint. 4to (186 x 252mm). Pp256. Colour plates, b/w illustrations. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Tippex and small scribble to end-paper, fontispiece loosely laid in, slight use and browning. Good in dust-wrapper chipped with loss. The first, and still probably the best, of the great fly-tying compendiums. John Veniard drew on the resources of his previously published booklets, and his vast experience of fly-tying, to produce a work that would remain the standard for many years. It is worth noting that besides flies for salmon, trout and grayling, this book includes many patterns for coarse species; pike, perch, chub, dace, roach and rudd, as well as a section on flies for saltwater angling. Contents include: Tools; Hooks; Silks; Tinsels; Dyeing; Materials for trout flies; Dressing flies for trout fishing; Trout fly dressing - dry flies; Trout fly patterns - dry flies; Trout fly dressing - wet flies; Trout fly patterns - wet flies; Hair wing flies; Streamer flies; Flies for sea fishing; Flies for pike and perch; Flies for grayling; Flies for chub, dace, roach and rudd; Fly dressing materials - salmon flies; Dressing flies for salmon fishing; Salmon flies - standard patterns; Salmon flies - low water small summer patterns; Salmon flies - Dee strip wing patterns; Salmon flies - Spey patterns; Salmon flies - Irish patterns; Salmon flies - hair wing patterns; Salmon flies - grubs and dry fly patterns; Salmon flies - shrimps; Salmon flies - lures; Salmon flies - tube flies. Two indices: fly tying and materials; fly patterns. .

Reading copy only. A well-thought of book on fishing the rivers of the Welsh Marches. "By no means all fly fishermen positively enjoy reservoir fishing and still less can afford the classic chalk streams. For many, perhaps the majority, trout fishing means small rivers, brooks and the upper reaches of large rivers. This kind of water abounds throughout the land but is most numerous around the Celtic fringe - the West country, the Lake District and along the Welsh and Scottish borders. For the devotees of this sport, contemporary literature is uncharacteristically thin on the ground, and it is this need that "Small-River Fly Fishing" sets out to fill. All aspects are discussed comprehensively and sometimes perhaps controversially - tackle, tactics, natural and artificial flies, watercraft and water improvement - based on the author's longstanding enthusiasm for this kind of fishing." .

Book First Edition
(Hardcover, 1972 ). 1972 1st edition. 8vo (140 x 225mm). Pp207. Colour frontispiece of flies, b/w illustrations. Green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slight use else very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. Inscribed to a former owner by the author.

Book First Edition Signed
A first edition, first printing published by A and C Black in 1972. A near fine book with a little rubbing to the edges. Signed on the title page by McKee. McKee has also drawn a picture of the 'six men' on the front pastedown, along with a flag including his signature and sun on the front free endpaper. A lovely illustration and rare double signed.
