Aristotle argued civic virtue imeans citizens are participants in both ruling and being ruled. Auden promote the same. 164 pgs in 3 chapters: 1, The Polis as "Time's Covenant" --- in Elliot's Late Poetry; 2, The Morality & Poetics of the City --- Malraux's Definition; and 3, Auden's Way: Toward the City --- from the "Suburb of Dissent". Very Good in Dustjacket. 0800604830. 164 pages. hardcover. keywords: Poetry Literary Criticism America Literature . FROM THE PUBLISHER - Many writers who created what is now regarded as the classic canon of modern literature - Rilke, Kafka, Gide, Virginia Woolf, Sartre, Beckett - appear strongly disinclined to endorse the idea of man-in-society, and their tendency is to posit a radical solitariness as the universal human condition. Indeed, one of the leading characteristics of modernism' in twentieth century poetry and fiction might be said to be the reluctance expressed by so much of this literature to acknowledge the social world as the repository of man's most essential truth: real life' is thought to be elsewhere, in the inwardness of individualist subjectivity. Again and again, the literary imagination of our time has located the scene and site of the human drama outside the realm of what Martin Buber called the interhuman.' But there are certain great exceptions to this general pattern, and, of these. Nathan Scott in his latest book holds up three of the most notable examples - in the work of T.S. Eliot, Andre Malraux, and W. H. Auden. In each of these focal figures he locates an exemplary instance in recent literature of the human world being conceived to be a world of coexistence, and he exhibits then as poets - Malraux, too, since his fiction is viewed as essentially a poetic enterprise - whose special distinction it is to prompt reflection on the nature of civic virtue. inventory #27925.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [Association copy, inscribed by Nathan A. Scott on front end page.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Clean, unmarked pages. *Autographed by author.* "Nathan A. Scott Jr. was a scholar of religion who reflected on great works of literature during a long academic career that included 21 years as a professor at the University of Chicago. Dr. Scott was a professor in the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1955 to 1976. Reflecting his own scholarship, he worked to put together an interdisciplinary program that combined the study of religion and the arts, primarily literature. In his work Dr. Scott focused on what he found to be religious components in Western literature, said Dr. Anthony Yu, who came to the U. of C. in the 1960s to study with Dr. Scott and went on to his own career as a professor at the Hyde Park school. 'What he wanted always to promote was that the sensibility of life and the spirit can be immeasurably enlarged and enhanced not just by reflecting and reading the Bible,' but also by studying other great books,' Yu said. An African-American, Dr. Scott could write with depth on the contribution to American literature by black authors and was close to many black writers and intellectuals, including Ralph Ellison."
