Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Yann le Pichon; The World of Henri Rousseau; translated by Joachim Neugroschel; The Viking Press, New York, A Studio Book, 1982, first English translation. Printed in Switzerland and bound in France. Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844 1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer), a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector. He started painting seriously in his early forties; by age 49, he retired from his job to work on his art full-time. Ridiculed during his lifetime by critics, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. Rousseau's work exerted an extensive influence on several generations of avant-garde artists, including Pablo Picasso, Jean Hugo, Fernand Léger Jean Metzinger, Max Beckmann, and the Surrealists. According to Roberta Smith, an art critic writing in The New York Times, "Beckmann s amazing self-portraits, for example, descend from the brusque, concentrated forms of Rousseau s portrait of the writer Pierre Loti." From the blurb While the young Yann le Pichon waited for his music lesson to begin, his instructor, Jeann Bernard-Rousseau, would allow him to flip through the yellowed pages of an album of drawings of wild beasts that had belonged to her grandfather. During the course of the next twenty years, le Pichon had exclusive access to family memorabilia, papers, ans books, as well as to newspaper articles, postcards, zoological treatises, and photographs the direct and indirect sources of Henri Rousseau s ideas and images. In this magnificent book, le Pichon examines the iconographical and psychological inspirations of his paintings, and discusses his influence on others Picasso, Delaunay, the Surrealists, and of course the native painters. A biography illustrated with a rich selection of documents completes this prestigious book. This very large format book, 285 pages measuring 330mm X 250mm, is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. The hundreds of colour and black & white illustrations will enthrall you for hours. This large and heavy book will require additional postage.
