Among the most powerful and romantic figures in early America, Johnson has been neglected in the history books because his career contradicts the prejudices against Indians so deep in our national legend. In Lord of the Mohawks, James Thomas Flexner, the biographer of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, winner of a National Book Award and a rarely awarded Special Pulitzer Prize, has restored to life the most influential frontiersman our nation has ever known. Lord of the Mohawks demonstrates that it was less the white armies on which the history books dwell than Indian power that won the fighting in the French and Indian War. The tribes, persuaded by Johnson to the British cause, made possible the victory which was essential to the establishment of the United States. A soldier who triumphed by ignoring European strategy, Johnson was known in Europe as "the heaven~taught general." However, his primary role in history was as a mediator between two cultures separated by the development of human institutions by hundreds of years. Sir William Johnson, Bart., was a well~adjusted, European man; Warraghiyagey, as the Mohawks named him, thought and acted as an Indian. Because of his personal Indian alliances, Johnson could establish policies which the British Crown had to follow. To his forest mansion in the Mohawk Valley journeyed from the east royal governors and colonial statesmen; from the west, sachems and chiefs who ruled over territory much vaster than the settled British colonies. Warraghiyagey could entertain more than a thousand guests in a style both rough and grand. Johnson's facets were innumerable. He became rich, as a furrier and a colonizer. He was reputed to have fathered 600 children with women both Indian and white, though he loved only one: a beautiful and political scion of the royal blood of the Mohawks, Molly Brant. He planned organized agricultural communities in the Mohawk Valley. Never was a more picturesque protagonist, moving in a more exciting setting, offered to the biographer's pen. As his many admirers would expect, Flexner has not muffed his opportunities. This biography was first published in 1959 under the title Mohawk Baronet; the present edition has been revised by the author, who has supplied a new foreword and many additional illustrations.
