Edited by the distinguished architectural historian, J.M. Richards, the book provides over 500 entries arranged alphabetically for easy reference, irrespective of chronology or geography. Major architects are covered at length by a leading specialist or scholar of the period~Sir John Summerson on Robert Adam, Sir Anthony Blunt on Borromini, Peter Murray on Bramante, George R. Collins on Gaudi, Robert Furneaux Jordan on Le Corbusier, Peter Smith on Mansart, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., on Sullivan, and the editor of the volume, Sir James Richards, on Alvar Aalto. These informative and stimulating essays provide the main style and viewpoint of the book. Shorter entries give factual information and put into historical perspective the life and work of hundreds of architects, together with such engineers, town planners, and landscape architects who have made a significant contribution to the development of architecture. In choosing the names, the principle has been to include not only authors of outstanding buildings but also those who have modified or expanded architecture's vocabulary and whose buildings stand as part of the history of architecture. Chronologically, Who's Who in Architecture begins when the notion of the professional architect first emerges, with such well~known names as Alberti and Brunelleschi, while geographically it spans the Western world. When it reaches modern times, such areas as Australia, India, Israel, and Japan, where Western influence has been strongly felt, have been represented. This is an invaluable work of reference for all those interested in architects and their buildings, historic and modern, beautifully presented with 16 pages of color and 250 black~and~white illustrations.

This comprehensive architectural encyclopedia features essays on more than five hundred architects and hundreds of photographs, drawings, and plans of world-famous structures. Sir James Maude Richards, FRIBA (13 August 1907 - 27 April 1992) was a British architectural writer. James Maude Richards was born in 1907, at Ladypath, Park Lane, Carshalton, Surrey. Educated at Cambridge University, he trained as an architect at the Architectural Association. He worked at J. Lyons & Co., assisting Oliver Percy Bernard, before being sent to work as an architectural assistant for the engineer, Owen Williams. But his main career was as a writer on architecture. As well as publishing many books, he served as editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971, the longest period in office of any of its editors. Adolf K.
