From Publishers Weekly--Based on an exhibit at Manhattan's Cooper-Hewitt Museum, this generously illustrated volume collects eight essays by European and American curators and art historians on French design of the past two centuries, from the emergence of the dining room (earliest records date the French version to 1694) to haute couture from the 1988 Paris collection of Christian Lacroix. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York NY March 30-August 6, 1989.Edited by Nancy Aakre. Distributed in the USA and Canada by Rizzoli International. Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York. Hardback with DJ. This lavish book was produced in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Cooper-Hewitt to commemorate the bicentennial of the French Revolution. It surveys the many changes in the "arts of living" since the Revolution by highlighting the development of design, industry, and commercialism in response to both aristocratic tastemakers and bourgeois demands. Each chapter, written by a specialist in the field, covers a special aspect of French design. Those of particular interest discuss the impact of world expositions on French arts, the development of department stores, interior design, and dining. Though one could wish that the chapter on fashion had taken the historical survey approach of the others and that the illustrations were more fully integrated into the text, this is an excellent book that will fill a gap in most decorative arts collections.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. L'Art de Vivre: Decorative Arts and Design in France, 1789-1989 Authors: Catherine Arminjon, Yvonne Brunhammer, Madeleine Deschamps, France Grand, Raymond Guidot, Francois Mathey, David R. McFadden, Evelyne Posseme, Suzanne Tise Book based on the Cooper-Hewitt Museum exhibition ''L'Art de Vivre: Decorative Arts and Design in France 1789-1989" (March 30-August 6, 1989), celebrated the bicentennial of the French Revolution through an exploration of French decorative arts since the war. More than 600 objects were exhibited, offering a view of the silver, glass, textiles, wallpaper, furniture, jewelry and fashion that typify the spirit of France. As explained by David Refere McFadden, curator of decorative arts at the Cooper-Hewitt, ''This show is meant to give people an opportunity to enjoy a two-century-long tradition of excellence in design and craftsmanship." Along with illustrations of the art pieces included in the exhibition, this exhibition catalog includes essays on French decorative arts, home life, dining, fashion, and design.
