OCLC 198545996 Shoemaker 8591 Prayers and contemplations printed for a Pennsylvania German audience and prefaced by recommendations from ministers of the Lutheran church and the Reformed Synod. The volume is divided into four parts, each with its own sectional title. Gott ist die reinste Liebe was first published in 1791, as a Catholic devotional; Eckartshausen's later mystical works were taken up by several exoteric groups, including Rosicrucians, and followers of Aleister Crowley's Thelema. Recommended by Lutheran and Reformed ministers of Pennsylvania. Witschel's prayers are in verse, those of Eckerthausen in prose. (Seidensticker and Friedrich, p. 217) PRINTER: CHARLES A. BRUCKMAN was the son of Carl A. Bruckman, a Saxon, and was born in Amsterdam, in the year 1792, whilst his father was on the way emigrating to this country. He learned the trade of printer under his father at Reading. In 1816 he started a Federal German newspaper, and conducted its publication for ten years. He was an earnest advocate for the election of Hon. Joseph Hiester for Governor. Subsequently he was a supporter of General Jackson for President. He died in 1828. AUTHORS: Karl von Eckartshausen (1752 - 1803) was a German Catholic mystic, author, and philosopher, born in Haimhausen, Bavaria. Eckartshausen studied philosophy and civil law in Munich and Ingolstadt. He was the author of Die Wolke über dem Heiligtum, a work of Christian mysticism which was later taken up by occultists. The English translation by Isabelle de Steiger received high acclaim within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, particularly by A. E. Waite. It also caught attention from Aleister Crowley, the founder of Thelema, drawing him to the Order. Von Eckartshausen was acquainted with Johann Georg Schröpfer, an early pioneer of phantasmagoria, and himself experimented with the use of magic lanterns to create "ghost projections" in front of an audience of four or five people. Johann Heinrich Witschel (1769 -1847) was a German pastor, dean in Kattenhochstatt and a member of the Landtag in the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was best known for his literary work, comprising many inspirational writings, poems, prose and a play. His devotional book Morgen- und Abendopfer in Gesängen ran to at least eleven editions and was the most popular devotional book in the time of rationalism.
