Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. h/b 217 pages, this is an ex library book with the usual stamps. Due to a large printing, the previous edition of this guide (1949) by John Wilson survived till the summer of 1971. It was a first edition, for the Southern Highlands had eluded the attention of SMC authors before the Second War, By 1970 the guide was seriously out of date and Donald Bennet commenced work on an entirely new appraisal of the region. This is now published in the format of the new series of District guide books, first issued in 1968 to replace the pre-war editions. The region of the Southern Highlands embraces the mountain landscape of the Scottish Highlands which is closest to the great cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is therefore well known, perennially popular and thoroughly explored. The author's wide experience of the Southern Highlands is reflected in his highly detailed text and in his magnificent collection of photographs of all parts of the region. The boundaries of the area covered by the guide remain the same as those for the previous edition. A glance at the contents list gives an indication of the large number of mountain groups which fall into the area, stretching from coast to coast, and up to Loch Rannoch. The current printing of the guide (1979) includes a Supplement of additional.
