  • Seller image for Picturesque Palestine Sinai and Egypt: Assisted by the Most Eminent Palestine Explorers [Four Separate Volumes] for sale by My Father's Books

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "Two Volumes or Four Divisions"---First Three Divisions dated 1881; Fourth Division, 1883. [Dates from the copyright pages.] Pagination continuous as if for two volumes: x, [1], 2-240; vi, [1] 240-478; vi, [1] 2-240; vi, [1] 240-474. Introduction in Division I; all Four Divisions have: Frontispiece, Title pages in red and black, Detailed Contents, List of Illustrations, Index; Steel-Plate Engravings (42 total, including Frontispieces, Vignettes, Two double-page Maps---Palestine; Egypt and Sinai); Hundreds of Engravings on Wood are full-page or combined creatively within the text throughout. All 42 steel plates are in excellent condition, including the maps; all paper-guards still present. The lovely interiors of these four books compensate for slight fraying of the exteriors. Although the original dark-green cloth is rubbed through at corners and spine ends, the bindings remain strong; gilt lettering and decoration is exceptionally bright on the spines and upper boards where black floral decoration is still sharp. [Please see my five images of the actual books.] All edges gilt; light-yellow endpapers are pristine. Interior pages, despite overall age-toning, are creamy-bright and completely clean. [Again, see images.] Detailed descriptions of long-lost places and their histories are timeless; the illustrations are sublime. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking. International sales sent via global priority, also with tracking; however, these four volumes, on heavy stock, may not be appropriate for international shipping. Domestic rates will have to be increased.
