EXTRACTOS La Masonería es esencialmente un sistema filosófico y religioso expresado bajo la forma de un ceremonial dramático, concebido para proporcionar respuestas a las tres grandes cuestiones que reclaman inexorablemente la atención de todo hombre reflexivo: ¿Qué soy yo? ¿De dónde vengo? ¿A dónde voy? El candidato masónico entra en la Orden buscando luz sobre estos problemas, y es ante el sollozo y la llamada de su necesidad interior, y por ningún otro motivo menor, por lo que debe abrirse la puerta de los Misterios, para que el postulante penetre a buscar la ayuda que necesita. La Masonería consiste en la búsqueda de algo que ha sido perdido. Ahora bien, ¿qué es aquello que se ha perdido, y de lo que únicamente nos quedan unos secretos sustitutivos, pálido reflejo de esa realidad? Lo que se ha perdido no queda explícitamente declarado, pero está implícito y se expresa bajo la perífrasis los genuinos secretos del Maestro Masón. Es la pérdida de una palabra, o más bien de La Palabra, el Logos Divino o raíz básica y esencia de nuestro propio ser. En otras palabras, el Alma del hombre ha dejado de ser consciente de Dios y ha degenerado en la limitada consciencia terrenal del ser humano ordinario, la condición que describe la parábola cósmica de Adán al ser expulsado del Edén. El Paraíso Perdido es el tema central de la Masonería tanto como lo era de Milton. Walter L. Wilmshurst Puede afirmarse que únicamente el Tercer Grado constituye la Iniciación Masónica. El Primer y el Segundo Grado son estadios preliminares que prescriben la purificación de la naturaleza mental y corporal necesaria para cualificar al candidato para el final que corona todo el trabajo. El masón moderno, por muy alto grado que posea, resulta tan poco cualificado para comprender la materia como el profano que nunca ha penetrado en una logia. Ser iniciado, afirma Plutarco, implica morir; no se trata de una muerte física, sino de una muerte moral en la que el alma se separa del cuerpo y la vida sensitiva, y hallándose temporalmente desprendida de él, es libre de entrar en el mundo de la Luz Eterna y el Ser Inmortal. Esto, tras las más severas disciplinas preliminares, se alcanzaba en un estado de trance, en cuya luz se sabía simultáneamente Gloria y Dios. Tras esta experiencia, a la vez terrible y sublime, el alma iniciada era traída de vuelta a su cuerpo temporal y se reunía con sus compañeros de antiguos trabajos para volver a su vida temporal, pero siendo ya consciente de su Vida Eterna sobreañadida a sus conocimientos y potencias, y solo entonces recibía el nombre de Maestro. Walter L. Wilmshurst El Arco Real es la conclusión natural, y plenitud, del Tercer Grado. Podría decirse que el grado de Maestro Masón es representado, en términos de teología cristiana, por la fórmula Sufrió, fue enterrado y se levantó de nuevo , mientras que el equivalente de la ceremonia de exaltación es y ascendió a los Cielos . El grado del Arco Real persigue mostrar esa vida nueva e intensificada que el candidato puede alcanzar así como el exaltado grado de conciencia que conlleva. No se concibe alcanzar mayor nivel posible que aquel donde lo humano se une a la conciencia divina y conoce a la manera que Dios conoce. Y al ser ese el nivel que la Orden del Arco Real trata en sus ceremonias, se concluye que la Masonería, como sistema sacramental, alcanza su clímax y culminación en esa Orden. Walter L. Wilmshurst Los Antiguos Misterios, pues, implicaban mucho más que unas meras nociones de filosofía. Exigían también un método filosófico de vida o más bien de muerte. Pues como Sócrates dijo (en el Fedón de Platón, del que se ha extraído directamente mucha enseñanza masónica y que todo estudiante masónico debería estudiar profundamente), el completo estudio del filósofo, o buscador de la verdad, no es más que morir y estar muerto; una afirmación repetida por Plutarco, iniciarse es morir; y por el Apóstol Cristiano: muero a diario. Su método estaba dividido en dos partes, los Misterios Menores y los Misterios Mayores. Los Menores eran aquellos en los que se impartía la instrucción más elemental, de forma que los candidatos pudiesen comenzar la tarea de purificarse sin dilación y adaptar sus vidas a las verdades desveladas. Los Misterios Mayores hacían referencia al desarrollo de la conciencia dentro de la misma alma, como resultado de la fidelidad a la regla de vida prescrita. Por poner una pobre analogía, los Misterios Menores tenían la misma relación con los Mayores que los Grados Simbólicos tienen con el Santo Arco Real. Walter L. Wilmshurst La religión popular no puede, bajo ningún concepto, producir buenos hombres, tal y como es el estándar de bondad mundano. No produce, y no puede producir, hombres divinizados con las cualidades de un Maestro, pues ignora la sabiduría tradicional y los métodos por los cuales ese fin puede ser conseguido.
