The original material was written in pencil and then bound in twenty-four calfskin covered volumes and the 1919 publication was taken from that material. The journals cover the period from 1815 to 1842. Vol. I covers The Tour In Wales ; France-1820 ; Aix-La-Chapelle , etc. ; and The Rhine Country - Dresden , etc. Vol. II covers his travels in France , August , 1824 to February 8 , 1826. Vol. III covers Spain ; Tour Through The West ; and Esopus And Dutch Tour. The three vols. include some interesting pencil sketches by Thomas Wakeman featuring a remarkable sketch of Irving's home at Irvington -On-Hudson.
