Softcover. 27 p.; 25.5 cm. `The knowledge revealed in an eminent degree to the saint is accessible, in varying measure, to all who share in the life of religion. Its presence is admitted even by Bradley, when he points to faith in the real being of God as the mark which distinguishes religion from morality. The admission is fatal to the view that religion is exclusively a form of practice. Faith in God is cognitive, or it is nothing. Religion, it has been well said, is evidential, whereas morality is imperative.' (p. 17) Good, stapled, in edgeworn and spotted orig. gray wrapper.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition 2nd Printing. Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. The story of the triple legacy of faith, freedom, and law, which came to us severally from Israel, Greece, and Rome to make up the unity of Western civilized life. BOOK NUMBER: A284. CONTENTS: Preface; Chapter One Introduction; Chapter Two The Early Civilizations of the East; Chapter Three The Religion of Israel; Chapter Four The Rise of Hellenism; Chapter Five The Greatness of Athens; Chapter Six Graeco-Macedonian Culture; Chapter Seven The Roman Republic; Chapter Eight The Roman Empire. SYNOPSIS: From the time of its first publication in 1923 (since when it has been revised), The Legacy of the Ancient World has been recognized as an outstanding contribution to historical and religious thought. It traces with consummate skill the contributions made by the civilizations of Israel, Greece, and Rome to the founding of Christendom, showing how these three separate strands were interwoven to form the unity of Western civilized life. Each of the three peoples created and bequeathed to after ages one of the essentials of a complete civilization. The Greeks were the fist to realize the worth of individual liberty as the soil wherein alone man's imagination and intellect can flourish and bear fruit. The value of the disciplinary function of external authority and government was seen and fulfilled by Rome. But both in the fields of thought and action the spirit of man is doomed to waste in anarchy or bondage unless inspired by the knowledge of an ideal goal. "Where there is no vision the people perish." The Hebrews, seeing the vision, transmitted it, through a faith that had its roots in the spiritual life of Israel, to the Aryan peoples of the West. Freedom, Law, and the Kingdom of God: these form the threefold legacy of antiquity to the modern world. William George de Burgh was born on 24 October 1866. He was educated at Winchester and Merton College, Oxford. In 1896 he joined the staff of the newly founded college which is now the University of Reading, and played a central part henceforward in its development into an independent university. He became Professor of Philosophy in 1907, and retired from the University in 1934. In addition to the present book, his works include Towards a Religious Philosophy (1937), From Morality to Religion (1938), being the Gifford Lectures which he delivered at St Andrews in the same year, and The Life of Reason (published posthumously in 1949). He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in the same year. He died on 27 August 1943. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
