Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Illustrations appear to be signed "C. Hultquist" (illustrator). 1st Edition. Author Wetmore has written in ink to second blank "With the compliments of the author to Mr & Mrs Wm Hawkins / Duluth Minn / May 1899" (the year of publication.) She has not signed her name. (Oddly enough, it appears copies inscribed by the subject Buffalo Bill are more common than copies inscribed by the author herself. This copy is NOT signed or inscribed by the subject Buffalo Bill.) It appears the Hawkins donated this copy to the St. Louis County Historical Society, Duluth, which added its ownership stamps to both front endpapers, and subsequently counterstamped "Withdrawn" to the FFE. A Dewey Decimal Number has also been penned in white ink to the bottom of the spine, but there is NO evidence of glued-in attachments, removed attachments, edge-stampings or any other trappings of a lending-library history. Both free endpapers present. In original gray boards with bison head blindstamped to front board; gilt titles clear to front board, though considerably faded to spine. We grade this copy "good" with modest rub to corners and to head and heel of spine. Collated: all 19 full-page plates (an unlikely number of which depict young Cody shooting people) are firmly attached where they ought to be. Author Wetmore traveled for a brief period with the Wild West show. She was also the business manager for the Duluth Press (Buffalo Bill Contributed $30,000 to build the Duluth Press building), and an advocate for women's suffrage. In 1905, Helen Wetmore relocated to Cody, Wyoming, the town named for her brother. There she managed the Cody Enterprise newspaper, which Buffalo Bill eventually gave to her. She died in 1911 in Pasadena, Calif. Totals 267 pp. Reduced from $785. Inscribed by Author(s).
