James Welch has selections of a "novel in progress" that preceeds his first published novel, Winter in the Blood. Here, the working title had been The Only Good Indian. There are several articles on contemporary Indian art that includes a 16-page portfolio of art works by artists Fritz Scholder, Carl Cannon and C. F. Lavato. 10 works by Scholder are featured and there is also a biographical "self-interview" by the artist. Also includes original poetry by Duane McGinnis (Duane Niatum), Ray Young Bear Jay Ralph Johnson and Archie Washburn. There is a 10-page section of poetry by Niatum and also a contemporary photograph and short biographical essay. 199 pages. This is the very uncommon original South Dakota Review publication and not the second edition from the Dakota Press. Appears unread, very light external wear.
