Oskar Kokoschka, considerato uno dei massimi esponenti dell espressionismo, iniziò a disegnare giovanissimo, nel 1897 a soli 11 anni. Le opere esposte comprendono alcuni disegni di nudi accademici, eseguiti dal 1904 al 1908, periodo nel quale Kokoschka frequentò la Scuola di Arti Applicate di Vienna; a questo periodo risalgono inoltre le sue prime opere professionali, quali incantevoli cartoline e ventagli decorati. Queste opere ornamentali cedettero ben presto il posto a uno stile più maturo, contrassegnato da una grande maestria e da una solida padronanza del disegno, uno stile spesso caratterizzato da temi di carattere più violento, capaci di sondare le profondità dell animo umano, dell istinto e del mito. Il volume comprende una vasta scelta di opere eseguite nel periodo in cui Kokoschka era all apice della sua potenza artistica: ritratti pregnanti, studi sulla figura umana, e intense illustrazioni di opere letterarie.
