Book First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good Plus. Maps (illustrator). First Edition, First Printing. Ex Library: 8vo, green cloth, illustrated with 9 B&W maps, thick library grade mylar-protected color photographic dust jacket (unclipped) depicting an early morning misty view of a northern forest-lake-&-mountain, xii + 309 pages of text + 311-416 pages of Notes, Bibliography, & Index. Melody Webb (b.1946) was a Park Service veteran and is a distinguished historian. She began this book on the Last American Frontier after serving in Alaska with the National Park Service and University of Alaska. Having lived and explored the region and studied an exhaustive number of sources, she traces the settlement and development of the enormous Yukon Basin with its varied Indian tribes and Eskimos through incursions by Russian traders, miners, explorers, soldiers, and missionaries. A Woman in the Great Outdoors is another noteworthy book by Melody, which recounts her 21 years in the Ntional Park Service and many efforts to preserve our country's resources despite political controversies and efforts by special interests (among them, mining and lumber interests, hunters, snowmobilers, bicyclists, RV owners, film producers and concessioners) to take over, exploit--and ofttimes despoil--our splendid natural heritage. Webb is married to Robert M. Utley (b. 1920; q.v. in catalogue), former chief historian for the National Park Service and the author of numerous award-winning biographies of Custer, Sitting Bull, and Billy the Kid. Typical Ex Library copy with stamps, barcodes, call number label on spine, red deaccession stamp, tan card pouch, and white check-out sheet. Textblock solid, pages clean, no annotations or marginalia; Scotch tape holding down dust jacket with some offset onto endpapers; maps unfoxed.
