Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First published as a collected edition in 1958 in the USA, this is a first edition thus, first impression UK edition. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, remains of old sticky label to back jacket, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 401pp, illustrated, map endpapers. Joshua Slocum (1844 on or shortly after November 14, 1909), was the first man to sail single handedly around the world. He was a Nova Scotian born, naturalised American seaman and adventurer, and writer. In 1900 he wrote a book about his journey 'Sailing Alone Around the World' which became an international best seller. He disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his boat the Spray. Slocum was probably the most legendary sailor of all time. This edition of his writings, reissued to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Slocum's singlehanded voyage, includes the saga 'Sailing Alone Around the World' the story of Slocum's solo voyage and the 'The Voyage of the Destroyer'. In addition Slocum's 'Rescue of Some Gilbert Islanders' and his private correspondence about the 'Aquidneck' disaster are included. The editor has added an introduction and extensive annotations to the text. Quite a scarce book.
