Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Cover has some light edge and corner wear. Pages are tight and clean. No noticed markings. Overall great condition! ; It is remarkable that there are so many good photographs of territorial Utah. Photography in the nineteenth century was complicated and involved sensitive silver-coated-copper, guncotton-glass, and blackened-sheet-iron plates, as well as the related storage and transportation difficulties. Yet thirteen early shutterbugs found their way to Utah to photograph the impressive gothic templethe focal point of the territoryand the Mormon people, as well as their farms and factories, surrounding landscapes, and recreational pastimes. Miraculously many of these priceless portraits and scenes have been preserved to the present. Nelson Wadsworth's book includes four hundred examples of the best surviving frontier photographs taken, beginning in 1853. The images capture the progress and moods of the Utah Territory over a forty-year period as the Salt Lake temple rose from the valley floor and other buildings began to emerge on neighboring blocks. The frontier people in these photographs are featured both in formal portraits and informal group poses. One can see the changes in urban technology and fashion, in the look of the surrounding landscapes, in recreational pasttimes, and even a more refined look in the people themselves. Miraculously, many of these priceless scenes are as clear today as when they were originally captured on glass plates. Wadsworth presents the lives of these pioneer photographers as trail blazers in their own right, working with light and shadow rather than in soil and stone. Four of the artists are well-known: C. R. Savage, Marsena Cannon, Charles William Carter, and George Edward Anderson. The others left a similarly impressive library of photos. Together, their collective odyssey blends seamlessly with the epic story they captured on film. Writes Wadsworth, "There were no 'candid cameras' in those days because of the very nature of the technology at the photographers' disposal, yet the pictures they left behind capture the times in a spectacular way." In any case, snapshots would not have done justice to the panoramas these artists framed through their camera lenses. ; 9" x 11"; 400 pages;

Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. This is a nice approach to Mormon history. It chronicles the growth of the Church from its beginnings in New York until the present day primarily through photographs and some drawings. In telling the story of the Mormon Church it also tells the story of frontier photography. Very interesting. It contains "more than 300 rare photographs, most taken by pioneer photographers, that appear in this book and record the growth of the Mormon Church from its earliest years to the present day: its struggles, its triumphs, and its people." Although price clipped, still a fine copy in a fine DJ.

One of a kind photo press book from Randy G. Taylor, then a student at BYU, presented to his mentor, professor, and prominent photojournalist, Nelson B. Wadsworth (1930-). This hand constructed book consists of original images from 1977 ranging from Taylor's time doing freelance work in Paris to photographs on campus in Provo. Photographs range from grim scenes of protest to the BYU football team to the Utah State mental hospital and much in between. As described in the captions, Taylor began work as a professional for the Associated Pressthe following year. He also sold images to Time Magazine, People Weekly, Sports Illustrated, and others. His most famous coverage was of the Gary Gilmore affair in Utah. Accompanying the book is a TLS from Taylor to his professor at BYU, Nelson Wadsworth, offering the book as a Christmas gift. Wadsworth's influence on the young journalist is evident in the gushing letter full of memories and life-shaping events of the author's transition from student to professional, which is documented in the collection. Highlights include: Walter Mondale as Vice President on his first trip to Paris. The self-inflicted burn wounds of a protester at the Soviet Airlines office on the Champs-Elysées. U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, W. Michael Blumenthal at the International Monetary Fund meeting in Paris. Actor Johnny Whitaker and BYU mascot, Cosmo, white washing the block "Y." Donny Osmond at his new studio in Orem Utah, with whom Taylor had a great falling out, which he hints at a couple times in the captions. Gay rights activists near the Utah State Capital, protesting a visit by Anita Bryant. BYU's football team, with a couple photos of LaVell Edwards. A striking series of 7 images of patients at the Utah State mental institution. A unique and varied set of photographs from a talented journalist. . 31x23cm, [20]ff. Consists or 29 original photographs with clipped, typewritten captions for most, opposite the images. Each photo is on 25x20.5cm paper, the images ranging from 12-18cm x 14-18cm. The photos and captions are housed in a bound album with black plastic covers and a printed paper label. Near fine condition with some residue and staining to the verso of a few photographs.
