First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good +. First Edition. First printings of this publication, three volumes, octavo size, approx. 1430 pp. Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) needs no introduction, the founder with her husband Leonard of the Hogarth Press and, with her brother's friends, one of the original members of the Bloomsbury Group. Many of her works have remained popular including "A Room of One's Own", "Mrs. Dalloway", "To the Lighthouse", and "Orlando". Her "Essays" have been reprinted numerous times, usually in an edition of six volumes. Per the jacket flap of Volume Two, this publication was also planned to be six volumes; however, per Wiki, the most recent volume published was Volume Four (1994), and we see no copies of this volume online. Hopefully the editor and publisher will one day complete the set, for as stated on the jacket flap of Volume One, "[t]his is the initial volume in a projected series that will bring into print all her known nonfiction pieces." ___DESCRIPTION: All three volumes bound in quarter cloth over boards (Vol. One blue cloth with ivory boards, Vol. Two red cloth with ivory boards, and Vol. Three green cloth with pink boards), Vols. One and Two stamped with gilt lettering on the spines and Vol. Three with silver lettering, top edges of Vols. Two and Three with yellow top-stain; octavo size (9 3/16" by 6 1/8"), pagination: Vol. One, [i-viii] ix-xxviii [1-2] 3-411; Vol. Two, [i-viii] ix-xxvi [2] [1-2] 3-381; and Vol. Three, [i-x] xi-xxx [1-2] 3-551. The dust jackets all with the original prices ($19.95, $22.95, and $22.95 respectively), similar in design with a different reproduction of a photograph of Woolf on the front panels, summary of book on the flaps, short bio of Editor on the back flaps. ___CONDITION: Volumes fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, and the interiors are clean and bright; a prior owner name, city, and date on the front free endpaper of each volume, the rear pastedowns with two other (small) pencilled markings, and a hint of dustiness to the edges of the text blocks. The jackets a bit better than very good, unclipped, mostly clean with some light dustiness and a very few scattered spots of soil, minor overall edgewear, sunning to the spines, Vol. Two with a small green sticker on the back panel and light foxing on the verso. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is unusually heavy and additional postage may; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help.
