Book First Edition
Full-Leather. Condition: Good. First Edition. Originally conceived as an eight volume edition as indicated on the title page of the first volume but expanded to twelve volumes and bound as a set. The first six volumes were published in 1776. The seventh was published in 1777 so may be a second edition. Volume VIII was published in 1776. Volumes IX to XII were all published in 1777. Mostly in good condition although one volume has a loose front board. Contemporary full leather binding. The title and volume number panels have been lost on all the volumes apart from one of the title panels. The spines have chipping at the tops and bottoms with loss in a few instances. There is also some cracking to the edges but the binding is generally secure. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Name of a previous owner in ink to the blank pages following the front free endpapers - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - and there is the bookplate of another family member to the front pastedowns. There is also the name of another family member in ink with the date 1783. Browning and some spotting to the pages at the front and back. Volume II has a line drawing to the reverse of the rear free endpaper. The text block of Volume IV is uneven with some sections protruding at the edges but the binding seems secure. Volume V has a half inch piece missing from the surface of the spine at the bottom and one of the blank pages at the front has been removed. The text block of this volume is also uneven with some sections protruding at the edges but again the binding seems secure enough. Line drawing of W. Pitt to the reverse of the rear free endpaper. Volume VI has a little more spotting to the pages at the front. Volume VII has a detached front board. Volume IX has a detached front board and the page immediately after the front free endpaper is loose. Volume IX has two sections protruding slightly - they are slightly loose but not coming away - and there is a crack to the spine. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in places and in particular to the pages at the front of the books but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. Heavy item due to it being twelve volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.
