Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Upton, Florence (illustrator). Original coloured pictorial boards with brown cloth spine. Approx. 11in by 8.5in, oblong 8vo. 64pp with numerous full page colour illustrations and monochrome text illustrations. This is the first of 13 Golliwogg books written and illustrated by the Uptons. In this first book in the series the golliwogg was not intended as the 'star' of the show and he was really just a supporting character to the Dutch peg dolls, appearing in just over a third of the illustrations. However he proved so popular at the time that he became the central character in the subsequent books. In all of the Upton books the Golliwogg is presented as friendly and kind. This is the story of Dutch peg dolls in a toy shop that come to life at midnight. With no clothes they make themselves a dress out of the American flag. Heavy wear to front board, crease and bend; small piece of corner missing from front and rear board. Piece of paper cover absent from rear board. Spine sun faded. Nice and clean inside, very good + condition.

Decorative Boards. Condition: Poor. Upton, Bertha (illustrator). First Edition. The boards are worn at the edges with some staining and other marking. The text block has disintegrated and many of the pages are loose. There are pieces of tape and tape marks here and there where repairs have been attempted in the past. Pages 39 to 42 are missing. All the others appear to be present but the page numbering is odd and while most of the illustrations which are not numbered appear to be part of the sequence there are one or two where this is not the case. It also appears that the repairs have led to some of the pages being fixed in the wrong way with the odd number page on the right making it hard to trace the sequence precisely. Page 21 has three-quarters missing, another has a six inch closed tear in the edge and most of the pages are very worn at the edges with chipping, small tears and edge creasing. A very battered relic of a bygone era. First printing.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Florence K. Upton (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fair+. Oblong boards have a green cloth spine that has light silverfishing and rubs at ends. Boards have heavy wear at edges. Front is a bit grubby and rear has a large brown stain. Endpapers were removed but covers are firm. Internal binding feels fragile but there are no separations. First and last pages are toned (from contact with endpapers) but the rest are toned to cream and generally clean. However, most have short, closed tears at bottom edges. A delightful treat.

First Edition
Original Paper Boards/Cloth. Condition: Good/Very Good. Florence K Upton (illustrator). First Edition. First edition, 66pp, patterned brown endpapers, printed in brown ink with colour illustrations and brown illustrations in text, ink gift inscription to title page, occasional finger smudge, otherwise pages seem clean, original paper-covered boards and green cloth spine, corners and edges worn, some damp staining to bottom corner of front board, binding firm. Florence K Upton (1873-1922) published 12 Golliwogg books between 1895 and 1907. The inspiration for the books came from a black doll she and her sisters had been given when they were small and which she felt would go with the Dutch dolls she had prepared as models for the children's book she wanted to write. The verses were written by her mother but it is the charming treatment of the characters in Florence's illustrations that made them so popular. Although produced in large numbers, like so many really popular children's books, the vast majority were read, scribbled on, torn and destroyed by their young readers. Examples such as this copy in good condition are now scarce. Size: 8.75 X 11 Inches. Illustrated Children.
