In his richly illustrated book, German-Jewish journalist and writer, a left-wingdemocratandpacifist, Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935) sharply criticizes the anti-democratic political processes of the late 1920's Germany and the threat of National Socialism. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Tucholsky's work was among the first ones to be bannedas "un-German", and burned. He was also one of the first authors whose German citizenship was revoked. The cover and the layout of the book was designed by the German visual artist, John Heartfield (1891-1968), famousfor his anti-Nazi and anti-fascist photomontages.
