Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Second Edition [stated]. [6], 183, [1] pages. Illustrations. Chronology. Footnotes. Index. Some chips and small pieces missing to dust jacket. Daniel Carroll Toomey is considered a leading authority on the Civil War in Maryland. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he is the author or co-author of ten books relating to that subject including The Civil War in Maryland, Baltimore During the Civil War, and The Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home. This book is a chronology of military operations and major political events within the state of Maryland. Its aim is two-fold. First, to dramatize the involvement and importance of Maryland, the smallest border state, during the first year of the war. Second, to recount, for the first time, over 150 battles, skirmishes, and minor military operations that occurred throughout the state. The state of Maryland had not seen an organized military operation since the War of 1812. Therefore, the attack on Harpers Ferry in October of 1859 by John Brown had the political shock waves of a major earthquake. It significantly separated the North from the South by making the Northern Abolitionist's supposed threat on the southern way of life a reality. The combination of location and personalities involved was a terrible and accurate foretelling of the bitter Civil War that would soon engulf the country. Maryland, as did other border states, had contributed significantly to both sides in men, money, and personal suffering, which exemplified the real tragedy of the American Civil War.
