No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original black and white photo postcard. Postmarked May 13, 1935 in Ketchikan, Alaska. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Imprint of "Thwaites" in the lower-left corner. A green, one-cent 1923 Benjamin Franklin stamp is tipped in on the back. Postcard is used. Postcard is clean and intact overall except for slight corner wear and what appear to be a residual marks from a killer (cancellation lines) on the image. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows an ice-covered ship, the SS Northwestern, off the coast of Alaska. John E. Thwaites (1863-1940) was an Alaskan photographer. While he had no formal training, Thwaites had a successful career as a photographer and depicted local scenes of Alaska. He turned his photographs into postcards which sold well during the heyday of the postcard industry. His career as a photographer began when he traveled along the coast of Alaska as a federal mail clerk aboard ships owned by the Northwestern Steamship Company and took pictures of local scenery. The ship shown on this postcard may be part of the Northwestern Steamship Company's fleet. There is handwriting on the back in pencil. The addressee is Kathleen Sather in Seattle, Washington, and her father writes to her. The inscription from her father may be in both English and another language, possibly Norwegian or Danish. "Ketchikan" is mentioned in the inscription.
