Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Scarce paperback, bilingual, 190 pages, numerous (mostly b&w) illustrations, NOT ex-library. Interior is gently age-toned, clean, with tight binding and unmarked text: no writing, no highlighting of any kind. Rear dust jacket shows extensive dark offset and shelfworn marks, one nick to upper edge, limited wear to spine (scuff-marks on lower section, a bit of creasing and scuffing to upper edge, one tiny nick). -- Contents: Collection of Eastern Sashes in the National Museum in Cracow; Present State of Research; The Origin of Silk Sashes; Eastern Sashes in Poland; Persian and Indian Sashes; Turkish and Armenian Sashes; Russian Sashes; Notes; Bibliography; Catalogue (Persian Sashes, cat. no 1-11; Indian Sashes, cat. no 12-15; Turkish and Armenian Sashes, cat. no 16-33; Russian Sashes, cat. no 34-51) -- As early as the 15th century, silk sashes were used to complement a man's attire in several countries of the East, and later (from the second half of the 16th century onwards) also in Poland. Their practical and decorative functions, and consequently their characteristic features, led to their being treated today by students of artistic textiles as a stand-alone among other types of historic fabrics. This classification is applied in practice, too, since in museum textile departments sashes are usually grouped into separate collections. Such is also the case of the National Museum in Cracow which, beside the National Museum in Warsaw, boasts the largest collection of silk sashes in Poland. Its essential part consists of Polish sashes woven in the 18th century in various manufactories and smaller workshops active in the territory of the Polish Republic of that time.
