Black and white photographic frontispiece. Illustrations by W. Clough-Taylor. Pages remain bright and clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Dedication to front pastedown and minor pencil annotations to front free endpaper. Binding remains firm. Boards have slight shelf wear with mild marking and corner bumping. Spine sunned and tanned. Gilt lettering to spine is heavily dulled.

Frontispiece is b/w photo of Lauffen, Bavaria - 1940. Between them the authors made 9 attempts at escaping from German WWII priosoner-of-war camps, they finally achieved success after 5 years of trying. Prittie was captured in the `hold Calais to the last man' move of 1940, his revolver full of sand. 400 pages of ESCAPE adventures!! Lots of maps, both of routes taken, harbour lay-outs, prison details, etc. Three or four are in COLOUR. Some photos and some POW sketches. Cond: Lincoln green boards with gold titling. NO dust jacket. Pages starting sli. at title page and 285. Boards show light wear at top and bottom edges, plus corners, plus top and tail. No tears. No marks. Prev. owner's name in pencil on ffep. End papers are maps of Germany and its neighbours. All illus. are intact and in VG cond. Quote (p. 240): " To me it seemed endless. Three-quarters of an hour sitting at the bottom pulling the trolley back and filling up the bags and then the same amount of time digging at the face. Although when digging, we encountered only."
