Bd. 18). - Erste deutsche Ausgabe (zeitgleich in Berlin bei Voss als Bd. 9 in dessen "Magazin von merkwürdigen neuen Reisebeschreibungen") von J. F. Sürvilles "Nouveau voyage à la mer du sud (1783)". - Henze V, 267ff. - Jean Francois Marie de Surville (1717 - 1770) war ein französischer Marineoffizier und Forschungsreisender in Ostindien und der Südsee. Im Sommer 1769 trat er eine Handelsfahrt von Frankreich in die Südsee an, durchfuhr die Straße von Malakka, umsegelte die Philippinen, die Batan-Inseln, den Bismarck-Archipel und die Salomonen-Inseln, deren Küste er kartographierte und damit einen bedeutenden Beitrag zu der später folgenden europäischen Entdeckung dieser komplexen Inselgruppe lieferte, die erst 1888 erforscht wurde. Er erkundete weiters die Meere um Neuseeland, bevor er ostwärts über den Südpazifik nach Südamerika weiterreiste und tragischerweise 8. April 1770 vor der Küste Perus ertrank. - Enthält mit eigenem Titelblatt noch folgenden Reisebericht: Imlay, G(ilbert): Nachrichten von den westlichen Lande der Nordamerik(anischen) Freystaaten. Aus dem Englischen übersetzt von E. A. W.
