Very Good - Please see photos as part of condition report 1962 , SUPERNATURAL OMNIBUS By Rev Montague Summers Augustus Montague Summers (10 April 1880 ? 10 August 1948) was an English author, clergyman, and teacher. He initially prepared for a career in the Church of England at Oxford and Lichfield, and was ordained as an Anglican deacon in 1908. He then converted to Roman Catholicism and began styling himself as a Catholic priest. He was, however, never affiliated with any Catholic diocese or religious order, and it is doubtful that he was ever actually ordained to the priesthood. He was employed as a teacher of English and Latin while independently pursuing scholarly work on the English drama of the 17th century. The latter earned him election to the Royal Society of Literature in 1916. Noted for his eccentric personality and interests, Summers became a well known figure in London society as a result of the publication of his History of Witchcraft and Demonology in 1926. That work was followed by other studies on witchcraft, vampires, and werewolves, in all of which he professed to believe. Summers also produced a modern English translation, published in 1929, of the 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the Malleus Maleficarum. He has been characterized as "arguably the most seminal twentieth century purveyor of pop culture occultism." Illustrated By: N/A Format: Hardcover, Language: English Dust Jacket: No Jacket, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket Published By: Victor Gollancz Ltd, octavo (8vo 6 × 9 152 × 229),Pages ISBN: Contained within this book is a collection of haunting and diabolical tales assembled by the learned Catholic witch-hunter, Augustius Montague Summers. A thrilling and spine-chilling compendium sure to appeal to those who enjoy reading a spooky tale by candle-light, The Supernatural Omnibus is one of the most infamous of its kind and is well deserving a place amongst any collection of dastardly literature. The sections of this book include: Malefic Hauntings: Mixed Types, Haunting and Disease, From Beyond the Grave, The Undead Dead, The Dead Return, In Love or Passion, A Vow Fulfilled, A Soul From Purgatory, Shadow Destiny, Black Magic, Satanism, Witchcraft, Contracts with the Demon, The Vampire, The Warewolf, Possession, Obsession, and Voodoo. Augustus Montague Summers (1880 - 1948) was an English author and clergyman, most remembered for his studies in witchcraft and for his translation of the notorious witch hunter's manual, the Malleus Maleficarum. Originally published in 1931, we are proud to republish this antique text now complete with a new introductory biography of the author. Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1948. First edition thus. xxi and 278 double-column pages. The Malleus Maleficarum, Hexenhammer, or Hammer of the Witches, first printed in 1486, is perhaps the most important and terrible work on demonology ever written. It is a textbook of procedure: an official blueprint for the suppression of an underground movement against the Christian structure of medieval society. The leader of this movement was the Devil, its servants were witches. The bible said 'thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'. Extermination must be careful but ruthless, and to this end the authors, Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, give the answer to every doubt likely to be advanced together with the means to extract confession and effect punishment. As a result, thousands were tortured to death in prison, or burned at the stake. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The spine is faded and there is lighter fading around the edges of the boards. The contents are tight and clean with a little light foxing to the endpapers. There is no inscription.
