Vignette title-page, plain title-page, xxiv, 368pp. John Struthers (1776-1853) was a Scottish poet and miscellaneous writer. At the request of Mr Archibald Fullarton of the firm Khull, Blackie & Co., he edited this collection of songs and ballads and provided an introductory essay on Scottish song writers, The work included songs by Sir Walter Scott and Joanna Baillie. For sale is the first edition of a two-volume edition from 1822. The book is bound in contemporary cross-hatched full leather boards with gold titling and designs and four raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some scuffing and light staining to the leather on the boards and more noticeable stain on about 1" of the rear half of the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with heavy foxing to the vignette title-page, the facing free endpaper, and the plain title-page. There is staining along the top edge and around the top corner of pages 361 onwards and the rear free endpapers. A name, address and date has been written on the second front free endpaper.
