Printed wrappers, 8vo, 16 pp About 30 entries. A bibliography of the early publications of this association, described in the introduction as folows: "The Canterbury Association was formed in March, 1848, to establish in New Zealand a settlement which should follow generally the pattern of Edward Gibbon Wakefield's theories of colonization, but which should be specially a settlement of members of the Church of England. Essential features of the proposed settlement were that from the proceeds of the sale of land ample funds should be provided for religious and educational purposes, for the immigration of labour, and for the preparation of the site before the arrival of the colonists by adequate survey and the construction of necessary public works. To inform intending settlers and the public generally of its aims, and of the progress, first of all of the Canterbury project, but later of the actual settlement, the Association published from 1848 to 1852 a series of pamphlets and leaflets. The best-known of these pamphlets are Canterbury Papers, published in serial parts at intervals from February 1850 until May 1852. But the Association also published several pamphlets before launching Canterbury Papers and others simultaneously with them. Bookplate of C.A.O. Fox on front inside wrapper, which also has an inscription from the author. Very Good.

Page dimensions: 190 x 127mm. New Zealand regional history, Canterbury, 19th century. Page 8 is a bibliography listing 8 titles. Straubel was the author of a 15 page bibliography of pamphlets of the Canterbury Association. "When the people of Canterbury commemorate the foundation of their settlement they should honour not only the proud First Four Ships, but also the small schooner 'Richmond'. If that 30-ton schooner had not come to Banks Peninsula in 1843, bringing William Deans to establish his farm on what were then described as 'the plains at Cook's Mistake' the First Four Ships would probably have gone elsewhere in 1850, and Canterbury might have been the name applied to the Wairarapa" - the opening paragraph. ; 8vo.
