Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Maps Etc (illustrator). 1st. This impressive, privately publlished book, sub-titled :"History of the Waikato Mounted Rifles", (WMR) is best described in the words of Lieutenant-General Jerry Mateparae, then Chief of the NZ Defence Force and now its Governor General, who wrote in his forward that the WMR could trace its history back to the volunteer cavalry units established during the Land Wars (1860s) "Since then the unit has steadily trained and exercised to defend New Zealand, sent men to the South African War, to both World Wars and to serve in more recent conflicts and peace-support missions,", he wrote. He described "Waikato Troopers" as a fine history which would do much "to ensure that the admirable record of service rendered by the Waikato Mounted Rifles is properly acknowledged." Prior to this volume on the WMR Richard Stowers had produced a number of books on NZ military history. Here he follows the unit through its various phases, from a voluntee cavalry unit in the NZ Wars of the 1860s, later continuing as volunteer defence force until participation in the South African War, followed by WWI which saw men of the WMR ashore with the ANZAC force at Gallipoli in 1915 and later serving as a horsed unit in Egypt and Palestine. During the inter-war years the WMR continued as a volunteer mounted force under a number of different designations. By the early 1940s, the WMR was one of the last two mounted units in the NZ forces and soon began to be mechanised.forming part of the NZ Divisional Cavalry which was deployed to the ill-fated 1941 expedition in Greece and Crete , later serving in the North African campaigns, before crossing the Mediterranean to Italy for service till war's end, including the bitter Cassino fighting. The end of the 1939-45 conflict saw the inevitable run-down of all sectors of the armed forces the what had been the WMR returned to part-time, peace-time soldiering, experienced another round of designation changes, but remained a tight-knit and popular territorial unit, Stowers has covered well these latter days to complete and exceptional account of a unit with an outstanding record. To complement his excellent and comprehensive text, in which history is well mixed with the recollections of former members, Richard Stowers has assembled an outstanding collection of b/w photographs of the WMR rifles from the Land Wars to contemporary times. First edition, published by the author in 2008, 320 pages including (at back) accounts of WMR reunions from 1946 to 2007, organised by the WMR Association, list of association members. serving officers from the 1870s to after WWI, WMR timeline, WWI honours and awards, regimental commanders, associate Commonwealth units, bibliograhy, 16 lists. idex of people. B/w photos and other illustrations throughout, 11 maps. This a little used ex-library copy. the only library markings on the book are two small code stickers at spine base, small codes label lower corner FFEP with "withdrawn" stamp over, The laminated green hard covers are VG+ with WMR badge to front cover, Waikato red/yellow/black colours top edge, pine strip and the front and rear end-paper gutters have been reinforced with clear tape, text block in NF condition. This large and heavy books (weight 1.6kgs unpacked) would require additional postage.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Cobber Kain Kiwi Fighter Ace Extraordinaire By Richard Stowers. Publisher: Richard Stowers, 2010. FIRST EDITION. VERY SCARCE (Seems to be out of print) Softback in very good condition, no inscriptions, some scratches to covers, minor marks. 200 pages A biography of one of New Zealands fighter aces. Born in hastings and brought up in Wellington. He boarded at Christ's College, Christchurch. This book follows his career and his flying exploits, right up until his tragic death. Liberally illustrated with B & W photographs, this book is a fitting tribute. In March, 1940, while on patrol with another aircraft, Flying officer Kain sighted seven enemy bombers about 5000 feet above him, and while giving chase well into Germany, he was attacked from behind by an enemy fighter. Showing the finest fighting spirit, this officer out-manoeuvred the enemy and although his own aircraft was badly damaged he succeeded in bringng the hostile aircraft down. Thick smoke and oil fumes had filled his cockpit and although unable to see his compass, he skillfully piloted his aircraft inside allied lines in spite of being choked and blinded by smoke.
