"Elephi, the cat you will read about in the following pages, is a real cat who lives with the author of this book in New York City. Elephi is black and white and very handsome, as you can see from Mr. Blegvad's drawings of him. And he is indeed a very smart cat who does most, if not really all, of the things Miss Stafford tells about. Elephi can and dos turn on electric lights. He likes to drink from a faucet. He knows how to open cupboard doors. He thinks a wash basin is a fine place for taking a nap. He very much likes playing games, and is especially fond of retrieving, which he will do over and over again if you say 'thank you' to him nicely each time he brings you the ball. But can Elephi really talk? Did he really rescue a small car from a snowdrift after the great snowfall at Christmastime? Well, when you read Jean Stafford's charming story and get to know Elephi, you will easily believe that this cat with his high intelligence quotient can do anything he puts his high I.Q. to."- dust jacket. VG-/VG- (stamped design on front cover is almost completely worn off, pages are otherwise very clean and clear. dust jacket has light shelfwear, corner flap is clipped).
