Mencken s American Mercury by celebrated writers ranging from Sinclair Lewis to Sherwood Anderson, Thomas Wolfe, William Faulkner, Carl Sandburg, Zora Neale Hurston, Eugene O Neill, Vachel Lindsay, William Saroyan and even Mencken (1880-1956) himself (and many, many other famous literary figures). American journalist and publisher Lawrence Spivak (1900-94) was publisher of The American Mercury but is best known for his later association with NBC s Meet the Press. Charles Angoff (1902-79), a Mencken protege, was managing editor of The American Mercury.
