His wife, who shares in his sentiments, thanks Mrs Smyth [ Eliza Anne Warington, the bluestocking 'Annarella' (1788-1873) ] for sending her a sermon, 'as it was an assurance of a kindly feeling, & of mutual sincere condolence'. The letter ends with news of a visit to Alnwick by Doctor Lee and his wife.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A good hardback first edition, nicely rebound in a modern half morocco binding. Five raised bands to the spine along with gilt title lettering and the date of publication in gilt at the tail of the spine. New endpapers (marbled and plain). 744 numbered pages. The leather spine of this substantial volume is lightly marked and a little sunned, and there are two small ink blemishes on the fore edge. There is some foxing to the opening and closing pages (including the half title and title pages), and lighter scattered foxing throughout. The name 'MATT B WALKER' has been stamped at the top of the title page; there is a knot called Matthew Walker (see page 474), but I have no idea whether or not there is a connection between a previous owner of this book and the knot. Overall, a handsome copy in modern half leather, the hinges and joints sound and secure, but with some foxing to the contents.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. Francois Arago (1786-1853) was an important French astronomer, physicist, and mathematician, who was also a politician for republican causes. For some years before his death, Arago spent much time revising his large collection of manuscripts with a view toward their definitive publication. This work mainly consists of the course of Lectures on Astronomy which he delivered annually at the Observatory of Paris over eighteen years. Each of the volumes is organized into sections that the author calls books with several chapters on the subject of that book, resulting in a comprehensive discourse on astronomy and related fields. The text is accompanied by numerous plates and hundreds of wood engravings. Bound in original green cloth bindings. Volume I has been rebacked. Gilt author, title, and volume number to spine. Corners bumped but very good. Interior pages and plates are also in very good condition. A very handsome set of this significant work. Volume I: 707 pages; Volume II: 846 pages including index. This set may require an extra shipping fee. SCI/07415.
