Book
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Acquiring his first Lalique vase in the 1970s, expatriate New Zealander Dr Jack C. Richards has amassed a collection of over 130 vases by the French designer Rene Lalique. Dating from 1913 to 1938, these vases reveal the sophistication of Lalique's work as a designer, his delight in the design possibilities of the natural world, and his graceful transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. While Richards acquired his collection overseas, it now resides in Gisborne, New Zealand. In this book, edited by Damian Skinner and with contributions by Carolyn Hatch and Jan and Simon Afford, Richards' Lalique collection becomes the spur to explore an untold story about domestic taste and international decorative arts in New Zealand, as well as covering the story of Rene Lalique's career as a designer, and the network of collectors who cherish Lalique's glass as a major contribution to modern design. Soft Cover. Condition: Very good. Theo Schoon (1915-85) is a controversial figure. He was born in Java to Dutch parents, but educated back in the Netherlands at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts. He arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1939, where he would become a catalyst for modernism. The first comprehensive exhibition of Schoon's art in decades, Split Level View Finder rethinks his legacy for twenty-first-century Aotearoa. The exhibition presented Schoon's work as constantly in dialogue or dispute with other cultural forms and artists. He shared his interest in Maori art with Gordon Walters. Their works shared a close, decades-long conversation. In addition to Walters, the exhibition included works by Rita Angus, A.R.D. Fairburn, Rolfe Hattaway, Dennis Knight Turner, Douglas MacDiarmid, Paratene Matchitt, Selwyn Muru, Arnold Wilson, and Ans Westra.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with only tiny amounts of rubbing to the cover. This publication documents the work of Rodney Fumpston, bringing together an overview of the 'rich basket of fruits' gathered from the three decades he has spent on the exacting task of producing a unique and vibrant body of prints. It includes the Fumpston - One Decade exhibition held at the Sarjeant Gallery in 1983. An important supportive component of the publication is Elizabeth Rankin's essay 'Remembrance of Things Past: Processing the Personal in the Prints of Rodney Fumpston'. It provides a fresh insight into the artist's life through a keenly observed elaboration of his ideas and working processes that in equal measure make each new work such a rewarding viewing experience. To complement the essay there is also a conversation between Damien Skinner and the artist around the subject of Picture Postcards, Travellers Tales: Rodney Fumpston, Tourist. The focus on that great New Zealand preoccupation with overseas will captivate readers, and discovering how Rodney develops his work form the experience of these excursions is most informing.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Emigre artist Theo Schoon was fascinating, unorthodox, controversial, pioneering and at times reckless. His life intersected with important cultural periods and places, where what it meant to be modern in New Zealand were being debated and articulated in art, literature, music and theatre. The art he pioneered and promoted - Maori rock drawings, the drawings of a psychiatric patient, Maori moko and kowhaiwhai, the abstract patterns of geothermal activity in Rotorua - were decisive for many other New Zealand artists, including Gordon Walters. And his example, as an academically trained artist with a good knowledge of modern European art and a commitment to do whatever it took to pursue his artistic projects, was both an inspiring and a cautionary tale. Schoon's is a life less well known now than it deserves to be. This superb, highly illustrated biography by one of New Zealand's best art writers corrects that imbalance and examines Schoon's claims on the development of art and culture in Aotearoa in the twentieth century. The definitive book on one of New Zealand's most controversial artists. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
