Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This vintage book contains Osbert Sitwell's rustic and pastoral eclogues - lovely poems of description and imagination capturing a certain essence of England past: "ENGLAND RECLAIMED, a BOOK of ECLOGUES" was published by Duckworth in London in 1927. This is the First Trade Edition. ******************************** Osbert Sitwell, in a brief preface to his charming book of poems, had this to say: "The sequence of poems, which the author has the honour to present to the public, represents the work of two years, and forms in itself a complete volume. Actually, however, it is only the first part of a trilogy, on the second volume of which he is already at work. The scope of the other two volumes at which he aims is indicated by the "Introduction", which is intended to cover the whole series. The first book consists entirely of eclogues, rustic and pastoral poems; the second will deal with a country town, the third with the cosmopolitan life of the cities. In this volume the author has attempted to find what is, perhaps, a new medium - an imaginative and poetic portraiture, by a synthesis of which he aims at recording a broad panorama, essentially English, but which seems now, by force of circumstances, to be slipping away from us into the past."- Granada, April 1925 / - Syracuse, April 1927 ************************************ TITLE : England Reclaimed, A Book of Eclogues / AUTHOR : Osbert Sitwell (Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell,1892 - 1969) / IMPRINT : Duckworth / PLACE : London / DATE : (1927) / EDITION : First Trade Edition (after the limited edition of 165 numbered copies) / PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade hardcover; 99 pages; 5 5/8" x 8 5/8"; red cloth with title, etc. lettered in gilt on spine ******************************* CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - A clean and solid specimen with the following noted BOARDS : Faded at upper edges and along joints; a tiny touch of spotting (to front board) and mild surface rub - else clean / SPINE : Compression to extremities - much faded, against which the gilt lettering retires shyly . HINGES / BINDING : Solid no leaves are detached or loose / PAGE EDGES : Foxed on fore- and bottom - top edge toned and has a couple of tiny speck-like spots - else clean / END PAPERS : Toned and with a barest touch of foxing at rear - else clean / INTERIOR : Foxed throughout - else clean / DUST-JACKET : Lacking ***************************************** EXCERPTS: From INTRODUCTION: "This chant of love, / This man-made music of the myrtle grove, Was new then ; in its cadence brooded Spring, / The sad months of miraculous blossoming ; / Whenever shrilling water met green shade, / Within that laughing, leafy palisade / - As nightingales, that with a diamond tongue / Cut glassy darkness - first the pots sung. / No sooner in these havens had they trod / Before by song they made a Demi-god : / All forms of music shared the sacred throne / And Priest and Poet could be seen for one." ************************************* From MRS. NUTCH IN HER ARM-CHAIR : "No wonder she was tired, she thought, / Working her fingers off, as one might say, / Working her very fingers off, / Every day except the Seventh Day. / For, ancient owl in spectacles, / She must sweep down continually / Upon her rightful prey, / The velvet-footed, clockwork-moving mice / That tittered so teasingly / Behind the panelling / Upon the Sabbath / (Oh, they knew, they knew), / Or she must organize a battue / Against the spider / In all his wicked, silly machinations.".
