Dans ces pages, Fred Wiseman raconte pour la première fois, avec l'humour qui le caractérise, ses années d'études désenchantées jusqu'à son passage fortuit au cinéma en 1967 avec le tournage de Titicut Follies à Bridgewater, un asile psychiatrique pénitentiaire près de Boston, Massachusetts. Depuis, ses films concernant les institutions se sont multipliés : plongées au coeur de la société contemporaine, vision de l'Amérique toute entière du Texas à l'Alabama et la Floride, et à travers près de vingt Etats.A partir de 1985, il s'est tourné également vers la France et ses institutions, la Comédie-Française, l'Opéra de Paris avec son film Le Ballet qui a rencontré une large audience. Dernièrement il a tourné Le Crazy Horse à propos duquel il a pu exercer son humour. Passionné de théâtre, il a mis en scène La Dernière lettre adaptée de Vie et destin de Vassili Grossmann, et Oh Les beaux jours de Samuel Becket, pour la Comédie-Française.
