Shelton Smith was a scholar of Christianity who spent most of his career as a professor at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. He received his B.A. from Elon College (now Elon University), was ordained as a minister by the United Church of Christ, and served in 1918 1919 as first lieutenant and chaplain with the American Expeditionary Force in France. Rev. Handy served as a pastor, an army chaplain, a college instructor, and a professor of church history for 36 years at Union Theological Seminary, where he retired as Henry Sloane Coffin Professor of Church History. He was a writer, an editor, and also served as Adjunct Professor of Religion at Columbia University. Lefferts A. Former owner's book plate is affixed to the front endpapers of each volume. His name stamp is o n the lower edge of the title pages of each book. Dust soiling to the edges of the books' upper page block. Volume II has small bumps to it s lower corners. The dust jackets have rubs to their corners and spi ne tips. The spines are mildly faded and have some dust spotting. Volu me I has some wrinkling to the rear panel and rubbing along the front panel's upper edge. Volume II has a 1" vertical tear at the front pane l's lower edge. The front panel has some creasing at its upper edge. I ts rear panel is dust soiled and ahs some edge tears at the upper edge .
