Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Shaw, Charles (illustrator). 1st Edition. THE STORY OF TEXAS PUBLIC LANDS: A UNIQUE HERITAGE, Gerald Sewell and Mary Beth Rogers, foreword by Bob Armstrong, Texas Land Commissioner, illustrated by Charles Shaw, softcover, probable first edition, illustrated, 1973. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. The first few pages have become detached from the binding. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The illustrated wraps are in near fine condition. 11 ½ x 11 ½, 53 pages, 14 ounces XX [From the land commissioner?s foreword] No one could sit at this desk observing the flow of business generated by the land resources of Texas without being aware of the land's importance to the people of the State, of the historical significance of the General Land Office and of the office's impact on the development of Texas. This book is the story of how we got to where we are today, of how we became the only state to enter the Union retaining title to its public lands, what we then did with them, received from them and, finally, what we have left. It is the duty of the Commissioner of the General Land Office to hold this public domain as a public trust for all Texas citizens. It has been traditional for the Land Commissioners to tell the story of the disposition of the Texas Public Lands in a publication available to the general public. More than ten years have passed since this has been done. We have received requests for such a publication from all across the State. I have therefore decided it is time to revise and republish the story of the Texas public domain. The heritage, and thus the future, of our public lands is too important to be ignored, and the more people who become aware of this importance, the better. If this book accomplishes no more than simply providing information to those who would not otherwise have had access to it, the effort will have been worthwhile. But I wanted the story told in a way that would be interesting as well as informative. I think my staff has succeeded in this endeavor.

Comic-Con began in 1970 in San Diego and continues as a very special place for artists, fans, writers, celebrities, and other professionals to gather in celebration of all things wonderful in the world of comics, science fiction and fantasy, film, videos, anime, and fun. From Ray BradburyÕs foreword: ÒWhen I was in my late forties, I was asked to come down to San Diego to attend the first Comic-Con at the El Cortez Hotel. I was part of a group of about three hundred people, if you can believe that. The fascinating thing about this was that these people all loved illustration. We were all very happy being there and enjoying one anotherÕs company.Ó Accompanying Bradbury (who is featured extensively throughout the book) at that first gathering were such luminaries as A.E. van Vogt, Jack Kirby, and Forrest J Ackerman.
