Condition: very good, good. First U.K.? Edition. First? Printing. 276, illus., maps, facsimiles, index, DJ somewhat worn and soiled. One of Israel's most controversial public figures--Zionist, freedom fighter, spymaster, politician, prime minister--shares the story of his life. He's a hero to the Israeli right wing, an implacable foe of territorial concessions to the Palestinians--and a man who's never been afraid to speak his mind. Now, Yitzhak Shamir at last sets the record straight on his life and career. From his years as a young Polish emigre in Palestine's Jewish underground--he was arrested twice by the British and had to flee to France in 1946--to the decades he spent in the shadowy world of the Mossad, Shamir reveals the origins of his passionate Zionism. He brings to life his emergence onto the political scene under Menachem Begin and discusses his accomplishments as foreign minister and prime minister. Complete with Shamir's blunt assessments of other world leaders--including Sadat, Reagan, and Bush--as well as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, "Summing Up" is a fascinating self-portrait of an Israeli patriot.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1994, inscribed 1st edition. Yitzak Shamir was born in the early part of this century in a small village in Poland. As a young man, he became a member of the Zionist youth movement, which did much to forge his strong ideological commitment even before he emigrated at age 20 to Palestine, then a British mandate, in 1935. Shamir became an active participant in the violence of the time, serving as a member of the infamous Stern Gang, for which he was arrested and briefly exiled. Here he reviews his activities in the newly formed government of Israel, culminating with his service to the nation as its foreign minister and then prime minister. A major contribution of this book is the account of the much-publicized rancor between Shamir and American President George Bush, which brought relations between the two countries to a low point. Absolutely essential for any collection dealing with either Israel or Middle Eastern affairs.Excellent unread condition. Inscribed by Author(s).
