Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Boldly signed by Daisetz Suzuki in green ink directly on the title page. Soyen Shaku, the "First American Ancestor" of Zen (1859-1919) was the first Zen Buddhist master to teach in the United States. He was a member of the Japanese delegation to the First World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, 1893, where he delivered a speech translated by the young and then unknown Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. Suzuki would go on to become the translator for Paul Carus' publishing company, Open Court, and the most prominent interpreter of Zen teachings for the West. A bright and solid copy bound in original brown cloth boards with gilt stamped lettering on the cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Photo frontispiece of Soyen Shaku. vi, 220 pages plus 15 pages of publisher's ads at rear. Clean and tight with crisp text. No name, bookplate or other markings. An early and quite scarce Suzuki item, especially signed. With a supplied clear acetate cover. Signed.
