Published by Blackwood, Le Bas & Co, London, 1906
Seller: Michael Napier, Kettering, United Kingdom
Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Various (see detailed description) (illustrator). 8vo (20 x 12 cms). [4], 350, plates. Dark green ribbed cloth; a heraldic design within an elaborately decorated border blind-stamped to the upper board; gilt lettering and decoration to the spine; a smaller decorative panel blind stamped to the lower board. Frontispiece and seven other black and white plates by, or from paintings by, W Boxall, Cruikshank, Alfred Johannot, J B Macdonald, Robert Herdman, Sam Bough and Gourlay Steel. Title page in red and black letterpress with a decorative vignette. With a glossary. Volume 4 in The Melrose Edition. Not dated. Caxton, T C & E C Jack, and Blackwood, Le Bas all published titles in The Melrose Edition, often sharing the same binding, and mostly undated; hard information about publication dates is elusive. The inscription, dated 1936, in this volume is almost certainly not contemporary with its publication, which I would put at c. 1900-1906. CONDITION. Good. The corners somewhat bumped and scuffed, more so at the top than the bottom; small scuff marks along the top and bottom edges of the boards; the spine somewhat crushed at crown and toe; but otherwise externally very good. Sporadic foxing, especially on the first few pages; endpapers tanned; otherwise good internally; the pages clean apart from the inscription in ink on the recto of the second leaf.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Various (see detailed description) (illustrator). 8vo (20 x 12 cms). [4], 364, plates. Dark green ribbed cloth; a heraldic design within an elaborately decorated border blind-stamped to the upper board; gilt lettering and decoration to the spine; a smaller decorative panel blind stamped to the lower board. Frontispiece and seven other black and white plates by, or from paintings by, John M Whirter, Cruikshank, Clark Stanton, Gourlay Steel, William M?Taggart, Robert Herdman and J B Macdonald. Title page in red and black letterpress with a decorative vignette. With a glossary. Volume 2 in The Melrose Edition. Not dated. Caxton, T C & E C Jack, and Blackwood, Le Bas all published titles in The Melrose Edition, often sharing the same binding, and mostly undated. Hard information about publication dates is elusive. As an inscription in this volume is dated 1906 a publication date of c. 1900-1906 is suggested. CONDITION. Very good. Corners ever so slightly bumped; spine very gently crushed at crown and toe; externally really very handsome. Endpapers and fore edge somewhat foxed, elsewhere scarcely at all. An owner?s signature dated 1906 on the front free endpaper; no other marks. Altogether a very nice copy.
