Fort Lancaster had its beginning as Camp Lancaster and was established by the federal government on August 20, 1855, for the purpose of protecting travelers on the San Antonio - El Paso Road from Indian attack. It had a short life of only six years. It was abandoned 19 March 1861 by federal troops and turned over to the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War. The post was then re-occupied briefly by small garrisons of Confederate soldiers to protect that part of the country from Indian raids. At some time during 1862 the post was completely abandoned and remained unoccupied until the end of the war. In 1871 it became a sub-post of the federal government. The final closing of Fort Lancaster came around 1873 or 1874, and the post was never again re-occupied by military personnel.
