From dust jacket: Volusia County is a land of immense splendor. The majestic St. Johns River forms the western boundary. In the eastern part of the county the still somewhat pristine sand beaches gently merge with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Tomoka River to the north empties into the Halifax River, which provides a scenic highway on its way to the sea. A variety of vegetation thrives throughout the county and givest the land a highly picturesque character. This natural beauty and the economic potential of the land have attracted a tremendous variety of inhabitants -- from the aboriginal Indians to the moder-day entrepreneur. All have had to contend with the natural limitations of the envrionment and also to struggle to survive in a society that tsometimes erupted in chaos. Hopes, Dreams & Promises is the dynamic story of countless people attempting to settle, develop, and wrest economic survival from the land. But their story transcends economics, and the author brings forth in rich detail this panorama of human experience. Exhaustive research preceded the writing of this book, and previously unknown ore neglected sources fully document the facts and interpretations presented in Hopes, Dreams & Promises.
