With a large folding engraved map (78 x 47 cm) of the 'Northeastern part of Siberia, the Ice-Sea, the Eastern-Ocean and the Northwestern coast of America', 5 engraved plates coloured by hand, 10 folding engraved plates, and a folding table. Small tear (c.5 cm) in the map. Contemp. half calf, marbled boards, extremities and joints somewhat worn, edges dust-soiled. First (only) Dutch edition. An account of the Russian expedition in search for the Northeast Passage to Northeastern Siberia, the Polar Sea and the Northeastern Ocean during the years 1785-1794. The expedition was headed by Joseph Billings, an English navigator in the service of Catherine II, assisted by Sarychev. The expedition greatly contributed to the mapping of the Chukchi Peninsula, the West Coast of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The original Russian edition appeared 1802. This Dutch edition was done after the German translation of 1805-06. An abridged English edition appeared 1806.

Die Kupfertafeln sind sehr komfortabel so montiert, dass die ganze Abbildung beim Lesen außerhalb des Satzspiegels betrachtet werden kann. Die drei farbigen Kupfer zeigen ganze Figuren von: Ein Jakutischer Schamann; Rennthiertungusin in Sommerkleidung, Rennthiertunguse in Sommerkleidung; die schwarzen Tafeln zeigen: Ein Jakutischer Schamann beschwört seine Geister zur Heilung eines Kranken, Ein Schneeschlitten (Narta) mit Hundevorspann, wie er in den umliegenden Gegenden von Ochotzk gebraucht wird, Anblick des Felsens Cukan, worunter sich Seelöwen aufhalten, Ansicht der Jakutischen Kolonie im Thal Omekon - Jakuten in Haus- und Fest-Kleidern, Anblick der Festung Svedun-Kolymsk und des Flußes Kolyma, Anblick des Hafens von Petropowlowsk und der Bay Awatchin gegen ihre Mündung zu, Anblick der Festung Werschue-Kolyms und des Flusses Jassaschna. In einer zeitgenössischen Rezension dieses ersten Bandes in "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden" (18. Band, 1805) ist eine 11. Tafel angegeben, die hier fehlt ("Rennthiertungusen stellen eine Jurte zum Nachtlager auf"). Dem Buch ist allerdings nicht anzusehen, dass eine Tafel entnommen worden wäre, der Buchblock ist augenscheinlich komplett erhalten.
