Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Seventh Printing. 361 Pages. This is the August 1978 Seventh Printing. "Dec 25 1978" at the top of the half title page in red ink. No other defects noted to this square book with bright, tight, and white pages. Fictionalized life of Dona Tules Barcelo, the gambling queen of territorial Santa Fe in the 1830's. The story of this exciting historical figure is a vivid picture of life in the Southwest in the 1830's when all that territory belonged to Mexico. At Santa Fe, the musty pomp of fading Spain mingled with the acrid smell and gutsy language of buffalo hunters, gringo traders, gamblers, elegant caballeros, and crooked politicians plundering the new nation. It was a time when all lived dangerously, and Dona Tules Barcelo more dangerously than all. As a child she had known cold and hunger and witnessed the terror of Navajo raids. She dreamed of fine clothes and a rich marriage but realized the bitter hopelessness of the poor. But when a blue-eyed Yankee gave her a gold friendship ring, her luck began to turn and Dona Tules began her role as a notorious gambling queen. She became the governor's mistress and a power in the town where she once had been despised. Contents in Four Parts: Taos 1821-1822, Manzano 1822-1828, El Real De Dolores 1828-1829, and Santa Fe 1829-1846.
